After you arrive the nearest Railway station i. e New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or the airport (IXB- Bagdogra), there are many options available to choose your route to Darjeeling. Only a few will know the way to Sittong. This destinations is a rural destination, so you will be ready to expect not much of the luxuries that you otherwise claim in the cities. However, this is obvious that the environment that will be served, will be right from the nature’s own lap and all without any artificial inclusion. So, act brave and confident with the cab drivers and ask them to take the Kalijhora Route. It will be a drive of around 2 hourS from Siliguri through the bank of River Teesta to Reach Kalijhora. On the way you will bypass the coronation bridge without crossing it to the right , taking straight way. Just stop at the coronation bridge and you can enjoy the sight of river Teesta flowing all the way from Himalayas to the ocean. Then again start the journey and reach Kalijhora. Kalijhora is a small roadside town located on the bank of River Teesta. This place has grown it’s attraction because of the mighty Dam that is constructed on river Teesta. You can also enjoy a few moments here . From this town you have to leave the national highway and take a connecting road towards your left that will climb you up to the sittong Hills. From this point it will take around an hour for you to reach Sittong Homestay. On the way you will see the beauty of Cinchona Plantation carpeting the hills.
The morning in Rural Darjeeling is all filled with the chirping of wild birds with no sounds of vehicles and crowd. It’s the silence of the valley that will take your heart away. Morning is best to take a walk to the nearby plantation and learn to identify few of the medicinal plants the hill people use. Some commonly found herbal medicines are locally named as Budo oKhati (The old medicine), Pakhanbet , etc. A local person will always be there to help you to take your around the village and other secret places that only they know. After the breakfast, you can move to drive to Selphu, another beautiful Rural destination to watch the beautiful. There is also a sunrise point which you can keep for the next day before checking out from the homestay. So just visit the spot and you can enjoy the beauty of the open valley. Aahaal Dara in local language means the Boggy Hill, and no doubt the hill has a open space.
There is also a lake that is around 20 minutes trek from Shelphu, the name is Namthing lake. So you would not miss the beautiful spot that is hardly known to any guests who visit Darjeeling Every Year. This lake is surrounded by Mountains and is locally worshiped by the Lepcha Community.
After full days trekking and visiting the nearby destinations of Shelphu you can now return to Sittong Homestay to enjoy your evening watching the mountains turning dark because of sunset. Although the rural areas lack many of the modern facilities, visiting the rural Darjeeling will give you a strong presence of nature and it;s connection with you.
