Laura Funk’s a mum, science teacher, and Colorado native. She’s the blogger behind We got the Funk, a travel, lifestyle and parenting blog.
Why did you start travel blogging? How long have you been doing it?
I dabble in a little bit of everything. Travel's something that I just got pulled into. I grew up travelling on long road trips with my parents spending weeks in our vehicles seeing the parts of the US that you need to be in a vehicle to truly experience.
That sparked the travel bug in me from a young age. When I met and married my husband, he was the exact opposite. He never travelled and so every vacation or experience for him is just awe inspiring.
He’s such a kid when we’re travelling and I love that about him. We want to give our kids those experiences too and so we make a point to travel, whether it’s day trips or weekend getaways in Colorado, or doing our own crazy road trips, we just want to share as much of the world that we can with them.
Name your top 3 most memorable places?
Mule train to phantom ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon;
Ocean Coral and Turquesa near Cancun; and Disneyland with our kids this past summer.
What’s the best thing about being a travel blogger?
I’ve experienced things that I never thought I’d do. I never thought I’d get a passport and then I did, I never thought I would snorkel, then I did.
I never thought I’d see backstage at Disney and I have. It’s always a surprise as to what you\re going to experience.
And the worst?! (if there is one)
Lucky for me, I’ve yet to have one!
Give your top tip to a blogger starting out
Don't expect anything, work for it all and plan to pay. Then you’ll be happily surprised, honoured and excited when things come your way.
Hotel freebies: take ‘em’ or leave ‘em’?
Take them! I’m a freebie lover, but I do leave the soaps lol...give me a sewing kit though and I’m yours forever!
What’s at the top of your list for destinations this year?
We’re taking the kids on our first family cruise.
Why should people subscribe to your page?
I’d hope that people would see that I’m a real person, who likes to share our life and experiences, and be a little goofy and just want to chat, share tips and be goofy with us back!
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve eaten on your travels?
I don’t eat unusual foods, simply because I’ve a lot of food allergies so I have to be careful and stick to a pretty clear diet.
Name a place, city, or country where you feel happiest?
Home in Denver, but I’ll say that I absolutely love Florida, even if the gators might try to eat me!
Where’s your next adventure?
I’m quietly trying to figure out how to spend a month traveling Europe with our kids in about 5 years.
Otherwise, it’s cruise, and then we’ve some Colorado getaways planned too and whatever else might come our way!
